The thirty-seventh English Youth's Cross-Country Championships sponsored by Provincial Insurance Company Limited was held at Roundhay Park, Leeds. The course consisted of two small laps and was 4 miles in length.
At the end of the first lap the leading group was spread out over 15 metres and included Clifton Bradeley (City of Stoke-on-Trent AC), Robert Farish (Blackheath Harriers), J Parker (Leicester Coritanian AC), David McShane (Cambuslang Harriers), Paul Roden (East Cheshire Harriers), Richard Carter (Brighton & Hove AC) and Mark Vile (Westbury Harriers). Farish made a push on the second lap and established a 20-metre lead but he withdrew after 3 miles leaving Mark Vile in pole position. Tracking Vile were Bradeley, Roden and R Higgins (Preston Harriers). On the final incline Vile had established a 30 metre lead from Roden with Bradeley the same distance back in third. Vile won in 21 minutes dead with Roden second and Bradeley third.
