The thirty-ninth Junior Men's English Cross-Country Championships took place at Town Moor in Newcastle, this was the first time Newcastle had hosted the race, Provincial Insurance continued their support of the event.
A mile into the race Andy North (Belgrave Harriers) was leading with Gary Horne (Stockport Striders), Chris Sweeney (Birmingham University AC), Dale Laughlin (Chelmsford AC), Southern champion Spencer Newport (Tonbridge AC), Nick O'Brien (Stretford AC), Darrell Smith (Tonbridge AC), John Nuttall (Preston Harriers), Robert Whalley (Scarborough Harriers) and Steve Halliday (Halifax Harriers) all close up. Towards the end of the first lap North still led from Northern champion Michael Hutchinson (Tynedale Harriers) and Sweeney. Further back were Smith, Nuttall and Halliday.
On the second lap, Sweeney, Hutchinson and Smith had caught and passed North. A mile into the second lap Sweeney upped the tempo to move away from Smith and Hutchinson with North further back in fourth. Sweeney continued to move away and won by 14 seconds from Smith with Hutchinson third.
