The forty-fourth Junior Men's English Senior Cross-Country Championships took place at Stopsley Sports Centre in Luton. This was the fourth time the race had been held as this location having hosted in 1979, 1983 and 1987. Provincial Insurance Company sponsored the race for the last time having been the sponsor since 1974.
At the halfway point of the first lap Northern champion Andrew Pearson (Longwood Harriers), Alastair O'Connor (Royal Sutton Coldfield AC) and Steve Green (Stretford) were the early leaders. Going into the second lap Pearson had established a 15 second lead. Steffan White (Coventry Godiva Harriers), Green and Jon Gascoyne (Harlow AC) gave chase but seemed to be battling for the silver and bronze medals. By the middle of the second lap the chasing trio had reduced Pearson's lead to 9 seconds but couldn't make any further headway and Pearson won in 31:45 with White second and Gascoyne third.
