Witton Park, Blackburn in Lancashire hosted the sixty-second Senior Women's National Cross-Country Championships. The two-lap course was 6,000 metres in length.
Paula Radcliffe (Bedford & County AC) was a hot favourite for the individual title and went into an early lead and only Alison Wyeth (Parkside AC) could match Radcliffe's tempo.
The chasing group consisted of Laura Adam (Parkside AC), Jenny Clague (Liverpool Harriers), Lynne Robinson (Coventry Godiva Harriers), Liz Talbot (Bedford & County AC) and Carol Greenwood (Bingley Harriers). On the biggest to the hills Radcliffe began to put daylight between herself and the rest of the field, a trio consisting of Alison Hulley (Leeds City AC), Wyeth and Clague were giving chase. At the half-way stage Radcliffe was well clear. On the second lap Radcliffe was not going to be caught and Wyeth moved clear of the chasing pack. Radcliffe won by 8 seconds in 20:51 from Wyeth with Laura Adam third.
