Newark on Saturday 13/03/1999 6.1 Km (Youths)

Newark Showgrounds hosted the fifty-fourth Youth's English National Cross-Country Championships. Sports Company View From once again sponsored the event.

Early leaders in the race were defending champion Lee McCash (Pendle AC), Andrew Sherman (Swindon Harriers) and Martin Cryer (Blackpool & Fylde Harriers). At the top of the course where the runners had to negotiate a muddy hill, Mo Farah (Borough of Hounslow AC) joined McCash at the front and they were chased by Thomas Hopkins (Crawley AC), Sherman, Cryer, Mark Griffith (Borough of Enfield Harriers) and Mark Hood (Sunderland Harriers). Luke Evans (Bristol AC) joined the leading group as they headed back to the Showground. By the time the runners reached the finishing straight Farah had established a huge lead and won by 34 seconds from McCash with Evans third.

Farah was grinning on the run up to taking the tape and told Athletics Weekly: "I was working all the way, honest!" Farah also explained he was held up in traffic and almost missed the start. "I only got here 45 minutes before the start and it didn't leave much time to warm up."

Sunderland Harriers were winners of the team title by 68 points from Bristol Athletic Club with Aldershot, Farnham & District AC third.
